What is the "crab-in-a-bucket" theory?

Part of human nature includes the capacity to resent those people that distinguish themselves and get ahead in the world. In fact, there is a common fisherman's tale that models this behavior almost exactly.
It involves crabs in a bucket...
If you've even seen this, you probably never realized what was going on.
According to everyone in the know, if you put a single crab in a bucket, it'll figure a way to pull itself out. However, if you put more than one crab in a bucket, not a single one will ever "break" out because as soon as one crab gets near the top, the others combine to reach up, grab onto it and pull it back down.
Maybe they get upset...
I don't really forsee the crabs thinking too critically about this, but it is a powerful metaphor because many people often reach out and try to "pull" another person when they see someone getting ahead or see somebody who's taking a completely different path, the tendency is to reach out and try to pull that person back. If and when they resist, this same people then begin to punish the "outcast" using many social ways.
Ironically, often the people who pull you back are those who are close to you, primarily because they see your accomplishments and achievements as a negative reflection on themselves.
Fitness is one of these achievements. Therefore, when you begin your program, make sure to keep much of it to yourself. Better to make everything seem effortless and keep almost everyone out of your business.
